When you talk about industrial communities in Chicago, most people think of the historic Pullman neighborhood and railcar company. But railcars have been manufactured in the lesser-known Hegewisch neighborhood since the 1800s. Today, the neighborhood is home to CRRC’s manufacturing facility.

The Hegewisch neighborhood was established in 1883 by Adolph Hegewisch, president of the United States Rolling Stock Company, another railroad manufacturer. He envisioned creating a company town similar to Pullman’s, and even though the company eventually went into receivership, Hegewisch remained a bustling manufacturing neighborhood well into the 1900s.

Bringing railcar manufacturing back to Chicago is one of CRRC’s main goals. No longer known as a manufacturing hub, many people don’t know that CTA trains are being made right here in Chicago. But this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to people who know Chicago’s long history of railcar success. CRRC is proud to bring railcar manufacturing back to Hegewisch and provide jobs for residents and members of the surrounding community.

CRRC brought railcar manufacturing back to Hegewisch just three blocks away from where Chicago’s first railcar company, the U.S. Rolling Stock Company, started back in the 1800s at 135th St. and Brandon Ave.
